Helping Struggling Readers and English Language Learners to Read and Write Better

Reading intervention students and students who are learning English as a second language have challenges that resemble each other.  Students who know how to decode do not necessarily have good reading comprehension or writing skills.

When asked to summarize something they have read, these students may mention some interesting detail while missing the big picture.  They often can tell you what they want to write about, but when it comes to actually putting words on the page, they struggle to organize their thoughts.

Reading comprehension and writing are not isolated skills so this page will address both issues.  It will look at tools that are designed to help students improve their reading comprehension as well as plan and arrange their  ideas for writing.  There will also be links to research-based reading programs, pre-writing planners for brainstorming, and thinking maps that can help struggling readers and English language learners with organizing their ideas before they write.
