Pre-Reading Strategies

Picture
So your Medieval European History teacher tells you, "Read pages 114-237 for homework tomorrow and be prepared to take a quiz."  Do these words make your blood run cold?  Do you ever freak out when you sit down to do a difficult reading assignment?  Do you know how to prepare to read?  Many struggling readers and English language learners need help getting started with reading.  They may lack background information, concepts, or even key vocabulary words.  I work a lot with my students to get them involved in activities to help them prepare before they read.  I ask them to make predictions and always stress that the predictions do NOT need to be correct so long as they are flexible.  We practice the strategies in this presentation with every piece of reading we do whether it is a one page essay or a longer piece.  I want my students to know that people who to use pre-reading strategies can improve their reading comprehension and their enjoyment of learning without having a nervous breakdown when they hear that reading assignment.

Quit whining and read!
